The importance of sound velocity determination for bathymetric survey

Bathymetric surveys are carried out whenever there is a need to know the exact morphological trend of seabed. For correct operation echo sounder, which uses principle acoustic waves scan bottom and determine depth, it important accurately sound velocity in water, as varies according specific parameters (Density, Temperature, Pressure). The experiments conducted data set provided by “Istituto Idrografico della Marina Militare Italiana” (IIM), official Hydrographic Office for Italy, acquired Ligurian sea. our case, formulas Chen & Millero (UNESCO), Medwin, Mackenzie were applied. introduction errors chemical-physical water column (Temperature, Pressure, Salinity, Depth) simulating inaccurate measurements, produces considerable impacts subsequently decrease value accuracy. results remark use precise probes accurate procedures obtain reliable data.
